Fundraising
The region is a non profit organization and is short on funding the trip. There will be a Calcutta For the Eastern Regional Barefoot Water-ski group to send Joe to New Zealand! This Calcutta is expected to cover roughly half the expense of getting Joe to New Zealand. We are also seeking corporate sponsorship.
The Calcutta will be held on Sunday, January 18th at The Clover House in Colchester Vermont at 5pm. The tickets must all be sold with-in 1 week. Please act now. If you would like to support Joe and this exciting opportunity please buy tickets (Calcutta Ball) for $50.00 each ball.
Additionally, each calcutta ball purchaser may buy raffle tickets for $5.00 each or 5 for $20.00 to win a 1/2 day Barefoot Waterski Lesson with Joe during the summer of 2009. There will be other prizes in the raffle. WINNER-Use for yourself or give as a gift!
1/2 day lesson certificates will be sold until the end of the calcutta at a discounted rate of $200.00 per lesson (this is a $100.00 discount off the usual charge of 75.00 per hour). This lesson can be used for Barefooting, Wake Board or Slalom Skiing.
Joe has been teaching waterskiing for over 20 years. He was honored to teach the UVM Summer Discovery Students from around the world 1986 until 2006. (He only ever had one person he couldn’t teach by himself..guess who she is?!)
The way the calcutta works is this. There will be an Italian dinner served… the 100 “calcutta balls” are each drawn removing them from play until the final balls are in place and the winner or (sometimes multiple winners split the final pot of cash). In the case of this Calcutta the winner could win up to $2,000.00 depending on the number of balls sold in time for the event. You do not need to be present to win. Make sure you include contact phone numbers and we will call you from the Calcutta to update you on your ball status!
But I wouldn’t want to miss this party…. The Clover House will be a lot of fun! Please join us and help me out by passing this information on to everyone you know…in order to help Joe!!!

Joe competed in his first Barefoot National tournament in Piqua Ohio in 1987. His Mom and Dad drove us there in their new motorhome. “Joey” made them proud. He began competing in the Eastern Barefoot Regionals in 1986 and quickly received his masters rating qualifying him to Compete at the National Level in 1987. Additionally, he competed in the open class early on in his barefooting career. He has won many, many medals in barefoot jump, slalom and tricks over the years. He taught himself to barefoot one summer by accident. His Mom was pulling him in the family boat on a little lake in Maine where he grew up…he was sitting on a surf board and she gunned the gas to get away from another boat..Joe had sneakers on…and he stood up.the board flailed off behind him…MOM was horrified when she looked in the rearview…when she got back to get him…it went kinda like this..”Joey get in the boat NOW..but Mom..that was so cool…In the BOAT JOEY…NOW” and so it was…he still uses that trauma of having his mom yell as an excuse for always…getting in the boat!!!
He would tell you that the best part for him is not the medals and awards but practicing with his friends and family…all the dedicated cohorts..Jeff Whitehead and family, Duane Gibson, Dave Newlon, Bruce Uvanni, Roger LeDuc….and then the guys he taught to do it…Mike LeBlanc, JJ Cioffi (sportscaster), and all of the little kids that are now adults..that stop him and say…”Hey..Joe…you taught me to water-ski when I was 6 or 8……” This summer he just beamed when his little great niece Madison age 3 waterskied with Uncle Joey!! He’ll make a barefooter out of her yet! That said…buy a lesson…you won’t be disappointed! Buy a Ball and you may win some cash…you will definitely be helping Joe.
Thank you for supporting Joe in achieving a life long dream! Dreams do come true! He has shown us all that.
